Who is Abbicrete?
Abbicrete is the brainchild of Wynter and Brian: two epically nerdy maker types who love concrete, sci-fi and swing dancing.
Early in 2014, Brian started casting small objects as a hobby. After a close call casting urethanes without awesome ventilation (tsk, tsk), I encouraged him to look for a safer material. Brian tried casting items in plaster, but was disappointed with its lack of durability. He tried casting using slip clay, but that method required a ceramics kiln to heat the slip to make it harden. He was like Goldilocks searching for the perfect porridge. While our local community college has a kiln, sharing time with other people and moving pieces back and forth turned out to be a huge hassle. There was a short discussion of buying a kiln — but if we’re going to have a piece of giant monster equipment in our backyard I figure it should be a hot tub. 😉
Inspired by reruns of Dexter’s Laboratory, Brian put on his white lab coat and evil smile and started experimenting with concrete. After a ton of trial and error, he created a recipe for artisan concrete that balances ease of use, beauty, and durability. At some point he started calling his mix Abbicrete, and it stuck. (Abigail is his neice — an amazing maker, sculptor, and mother of three.) After a year of supporting and encouraging each other to try new things, we founded Abbicrete together. We’re excited to share our product with you and see what amazing creations you make with it!
Cheers,
Wynter
